What is Snowkiting ?
IMCS is now introducing SNOWKITING for the 2007/2008 winter season. Now, those backcountry ski and snowboarding days are no longer limited to the world of mountains with or without a lift. By using the power of a kite to pull you, you will be able to ski or snowboard across flat lakes and rolling hills, like never before. Snowkiting can also improve your travel time in the mountains all over the world. By using the kite you can travel at the speed of wind and faster! At IMCS you will be able to learn to harness the power of the wind to carve and cut new tracks and travel across the many fields, lakes, and mountains in the North Conway, New Hampshire area. IMCS is excited to be offering a variety of new Snowkite courses. Whether you are a beginner looking for some excitement, or an avid snowkiter looking to hone your skills, the frozen lakes, snow covered fields and numerous mountains of North Conway can be your playground. This hot new sport of Snowkiting can be the perfect solution to filling those cold days of winter with a challenge.
Basic Course
All snowkiting fundamentals will be covered in the Basic Snowkiting course. The main focus of the course will be learning to safely fly and control the kite. You will become familiar with the equipment learning the parts of a kite, bar and lines and the function of each. You will learn the relationship between wind and terrain and its effects on the “wind window.” You will also learn to build “ground anchor” systems for all terrain types, execute emergency safety procedures, safely launch and land kites (both assisted and alone) and how to properly store kites. The primary purpose of this course is to learn to control the kite (static kiting) and to create a solid foundation from which to progress to riding (dynamic kiting). It is not uncommon to find yourself dynamic kiting on your first day depending on personal ability and local conditions. Location: Local field and/or lake.
Dates: Any day between January 1st - April 15th
Cost:

Rates are: $250 (private weekend);$225 (private midweek) $165 (group of two); $135 (group of three)
*all prices per person per day

Intermediate Course Top of Page
The Intermediate course focuses on getting out and riding. Here you will be using the basic kite flying techniques learned in the Beginner Course and applying them to allow you to move over the snow. After launching, you will explore how to use the kite in various ways; you will learn to stop and go, move down wind, tack across the wind, switch directions safely, and start to learn to fly up wind. This course will also emphasize discussion and application of riding in different conditions. Knowing how to fly a kite and ride in light wind (underpowered) and fly a kite and ride in strong wind (overpowered) will be explored as well. Finally, you will learn how to recover control in gusty winds. Location: Local field and/or lake.
Dates: Any day between January 1st - April 15th
Cost: Rates are: $250 (private weekend);$225 (private midweek) $165 (group of two); $135 (group of three)
*all prices per person per day
Advanced Course Top of Page

In the Advanced course you will continue to learn how

to fly and ride in almost any wind.  You will continue to work on riding with the wind as well as going downwind, upwind, and tacking across the wind with ease.  As you progress, you will learn how to use the kite to pull yourself into turns to switch tacking directions while maintaining an upwind ride line.  We will also cover how to rig and pack sleds for expedition style kiting.  Prudent navigation using GPS and maps will also be learned.
Location:  Local field and/or lake.

Dates: Any day between January 1st - April 15th
Cost: Rates are: $250 (private weekend);$225 (private midweek) $165 (group of two); $135 (group of three)

Kite Mountaineering Top of Page

Here we will head up to Mount Washington or Lake Winnipesaukee for some “above tree line” snowkiting or an “across the void” expedition style kite experience. Either one is truly an adventure that you will never forget.

Mount Washington: This is an all day event for someone who has already either gone through the IMCS snowkite progression or has equal to more experience than our courses provide. You will be climbing up Mount Washington either by ski or split snowboard. For this course we require that you have previous climbing experience with skins and have experience with crampons and an ice axe. You essentially will be climbing Mount Washington from the west or east side, until we’ve reached tree line where we will search for a suitable riding spot on or around Mount Washington. Kiting on Mount Washington is most certainly one of the most challenging places to snowkite, but when conditions are just right, it is one of the most rewarding experiences you may ever have snowkiting.

Lake Winnipesaukee: Here we are going to get some practical experience packing sleds and riding across the majority of the “Big Lake” by kite. We will be packing the sleds with all the essential gear to safely snowkite anywhere on the lake and set up a camp where an overnight camping experience can be possible. Obviously this is wind dependant so you will be prepared to walk out on skins or foot (snowshoes). Although Lake Winnipesaukee is very close to many comfortable facilities, the middle of the lake is truly a wilderness experience and can feel like a desert surrounded by a thin line of trees. Again, an experience you will never forget!

Dates: Any day between January 1st - April 15th
Cost: Rates are: $250 (private weekend);$225 (private midweek) $165 (group of two); $135 (group of three)
*all prices per person per day
Freestyle Kiting Top of Page

Here, we are all about learning the exciting side of snowkite freestyle.  This is a course that will emphasize in technical freestyle tricks with skis and/or snowboards.  Learn how to jump, spin, kite-loop, land blind (backwards facing away from kite) ride blind, and handle pass. We will talk about grabs and any other imaginative maneuvers you can think of.  You will learn to start small and gather the skills and confidence for snowkite freestyle.  A discussion and use of pads and leashes will be covered.  During this course, safety through kite flying will be a focus.

Dates: Any day between January 1st - April 15th
Cost: Rates are: $250 (private weekend);$225 (private midweek) $165 (group of two); $135 (group of three)
*all prices per person per day

Since 1998 Zebulon has spent a large amount of time exploring high and low, all over New England and New York in search of the most enjoyable snowkite spots. Zebulon is very excited to share the enjoyment of winter with you, with kites high in the air and snow under foot.
Equipment Top of Page

All technical equipment will be provided as part of the course.   IMCS uses Ozone made snowkites (primarily foils, sometimes inflatables) in all courses.  Ozone is one of the leading manufacturers in snowkite specific kites and accessories and has been leading the way in snowkite safety since 2002 when they introduced the D-powerable snowkite.  A climbing harness or kiteboarding harness will be used with all snowkiting courses.  You will be responsible for providing your own clothing, food, and transportation for the day.
