Manaslu Valley Circuit Trek, Nepal
October 1-27, 2011

Manaslu Circuit TrekJoin Rick Wilcox and Celia Wilcox for an exciting remote trek to the northern part of the Gorkha region of Nepal. Considered as one of the most challenging treks in Nepal, the Manaslu Circuit will reward us with an unparalleled alpine adventure. Opened in 1991, this area offers a combination of rich culture heritage, unsurpassed beauty, and biological diversity.

An impressively towering mountain, with huge glaciers and snowfields conquered by the Japanese in 1956, only after repeated attempts since 1952, it’s still rarely climbed.
The Manaslu area is mostly in the northern part of Gorkha district.
Geographically, the upper reaches of Budhi Gandaki river are, like Manang, “on the other side” of the Himalayas, drier and colder.
This is still a pretty remote area and, as such spared by tourism. There are no real lodges and few tea houses. This area lacks also communication facilities, making Manaslu Circuit Trekrescue difficult. Trails are rough, often hanging precipitously over the river , at places exposed to stone falls and landslides, making this trek a serious one, certainly, not for beginners.

Along the way, you will meet Gurung, Ghale and different Tibetan related groupsas we are just a few miles from the Tibetan border. The upper area bears the Tibetan name of Gya Sumdo, and Tibetan Buddhism prevails up here, with accessible village gompas and a few larger monasteries.
While we will enjoy impressive views along the way Manaslu itself will not come into view before Lho.

Manaslu Circuit TrekWe ascend the Gandaki River valley, which is fed by innumerable rivers and waterfalls, offering the chance of a plunge into some bathing pools. From here, the streneous section begins In Samagoan (3450m) we visit the glacial green lake of Birendra, before crossing into mystic Samdo. Here Tibetan monks inhabit sacred monasteries. The biggest challenge then awaits, crossing the snow bound Larkya La pass (5213m). Snow-covered peaks over 6500m towers above as we cross. We then descend through alpine then tropical areas, with ferns, bamboo, pine trees, waterfalls and aqua-blue green lakes laced with white beaches.
