Kangchenjunga, Nepal
Trek to the base of the world's third tallest Mountain
October 15-November 14, 2010
Join Rick Wilcox and Celia Wilcox for an exciting remote trek in Nepal's Northeastern region. This is the classic trek to the Nepal base camp on the western slopes of Kangchenjunga. It is suggested for advanced trekkers as we will cross over numerous mountain passes up to 19.000 feet on our journey to Kangchenjunga basecamp.
Once at basecamp we will have outstanding views of the beautiful Northwest face of Kangchenjunga, at 8586m (28169' the third highest mountain in the world).
Kangchenjunga translated means "The Five Treasures of Snows", as it contains five peaks, four of them over 8,450 metres. The treasures represent the five repositories of god, which are gold, silver, gems, grain, and holy books. Kangchenjunga was first climbed via the Northwest face on May 25, 1955 by Joe Brown and George Band of a British expedition. The British expedition honoured the beliefs of the Sikkimese, who hold the summit sacred, by stopping a few feet short of the actual summit. Most successful summit parties since then have followed this tradition. This outstanding peak still remains remote and requires a serious trek to appraoch it from any direction.
Unlike the Khumbu region, there is no cell service, internet or electricity, we will be 'off the grid' for the duration of this 24 day trek. This trek will be a photographers paradise, with hundreds of unique photo opportunities.
We'll spend 2 nights in Kathmandu, then fly in a twin engine Otter to the town of Taplejung, one of the most beautiful villages in eastern Nepal with a spectacular landscape, Himalayan peaks of heights above 7000 meters and a wide range of flora and fauna. From here we will follow the Tamur River for seven days to the Ghunsa River. We will then follow the Ghunsa with spectacular views of the famous North Face of Jannu to the Kangchenjunga Glacier. Our journey will end at the Pang Pema Base Camp (5140m), where we will gaze in awe at the huge north face of Kangchenjunga. We will then follow our steps back to Taplejung to catch our flight back to Kathmandu.
This trek will be a first for Rick and Celia and one that has been on Rick's 'Hit List' for many years. Call today to joins us on the adventure of a lifetime!
