Rock Leader Skills |
Rock
Leader PDF Download |
An advanced level course for experienced climbers ready for the
"sharp end." Leading is very rewarding but can also be
dangerous if you have not prepared yourself technically, physically
and mentally. On day one we will cover gear placement and removal
(nuts, spring loaded camming devices, tri-cams), equalization methods,
belay systems for the leader (from the anchor and redirected), rappelling,
rappel backup systems and placement of emergency
anchors. On the second day we will start with a demonstration
lead climb and then progress to a simulated lead with a rappel descent. |
 |
| Day three will address common problems
such as jammed rappel lines and devices, simple belay escapes and
ascending ropes. There is a possibility of leading on your own on
well protected pitches at the discretion of your guide. Students should
come away from this course having a better understanding of the many
skills required to lead climb as efficiently and safely as possible.
A good follow-up to the three-day leader course is our two-day self
rescue course to complement your newly acquired skills. |

Two-Day
Rock Self Rescue |
Rock
Rescue Course Description
Rock
Rescue PDF download |
In
climbing it is very easy to recognize a crisis situation; dealing
with it decisively is another matter. This is an advanced level course
intended as a follow-up to our three-day rock leader course. Self-rescue
requires the very highest level of technical skills. Guide candidates
spend many hours practicing these skills for the AMGA rock instructor
exam. The skills required are escaping the belay, lowering and hauling
the second, passing the knot while lowering or rappelling and ascending
the rope. Climbers taking this course should have a good understanding
of belaying, rappelling and placement of traditional gear anchors. |
 |
You are 400 feet up a steep friction slab
and it begins to pour rain and you hear thunder. Can you get down? |
 |
You are belaying at the top of a long multi-pitch
route and your partner can't make it over a difficult overhang 50
feet below. Can you get him over the roof so that he can finish the
pitch? |
 |
Your leader just fell and is unresponsive.
Can you get to him and lower him down the five pitches to the ground?
His life may depend on it! |
 |
If you didn't answer an enthusiastic YES!
to all these questions, then this course may be the most important
training you will ever get. |
| In an emergency, do you
really want to have as your only option waiting for the rescue squad?
This course will give you the skills to be a more responsible and
self sufficient leader. |
| Customer Feedback |
|
| I would like to give you a little feedback on the Rock Self Rescue course I just took. I think it is a course every climber should take. It was completely intense mentally and physically. I learned more in 2 days then I have in last 5 years. It made me realize how ill equipped I have been. I'm glad I took the class by myself because we moved through the material at exactly my pace, and it allowed me to fully focus on the tasks at hand. IMCS Guide Steve Dupuis was an excellent teacher, working through the techniques in a logical and comprehensive manor. He is calm, confident, capable and very professional. He speaks clearly and concisely, I was very impressed. Believe me, I will encourage all my climbing buddies to consider taking this course. This information is a more important addition to "my rack" then a set of Camalots. L. McCarthy, Middlesex, VT |
