Avalanche Awareness Course
Terrain assessment, Beacon, Probe and Shovel
This course is for skiers, snowboarders, snowshoers and climbers who venture into avalanche terrain (which includes the White Mountains!). Avalanches are serious business as evidenced by the increasing number of injuries and deaths suffered by climbers, hikers and skiers while in the mountains. This course will give you an introduction to assessing snow conditions and avalanche terrain. You will learn how to use avalanche transceivers, probes and shovels and what do do if you are caught in a slide. This can be a one or two day course.
This is not a certification course, for a complete course in Avalanche Safety we recommend the 3 Day AIARE Level I Course.
Student Prerequisites :
Students must be comfortable outdoors and prepared for winter conditions. There are no other prerequisites.
The proper clothing is vital if you are to enjoy the program. Please take the quote "Cotton Kills" seriously. Cotton is NOT suitable for use in the mountains in winter. Please check the gear list we have provided to make sure you are prepared. IMCS will provide you with Boots, Crampons, Ice Axe and any other technical gear we deem necessary. We also have winter clothing available for rent. Please contact us with any questions about clothing or gear.
