I love adventure. At 17 I joined the Coast Guard and sailed across the Atlantic in
a Tall Ship. As an officer I had three commands, a year in the Arctic,
taught mathematics, and chased drug smugglers. Later, as more desk-time
loomed, I took up climbing, serving my apprenticeship at Seneca
Rocks and the 'Gunks, with Winter forays to North Conway. Several
seasons in the Alps, and, after leaving the Coast Guard, epics on
Denali and on Pik Lenin, served to confirm that I would find my
fill of excitement through climbing and mountaineering.
My greatest love is ski-mountaineering. Besides
tours and descents in the Alps, and six of the Pacific volcanoes,
I have skied just about all the "skiable" chutes on Mount Washington,
usually with my long-time climbing and skiing partner, IMCS head
guide Brad White.
I've never had a bad day guiding. It's because
the people who come to climbing are a cut above the norm, self-selected
because they crave adventure………like me!
Favorite rock climb: "La Demand", Verdon Gorge, France
Favorite mountain: Any 4000 meter peak in the Alps
