Rainbow Mt. The classic route Solar Slabs climbs the left skyline up to the red band. As you head into the canyon you begin to see Solar Slab
on the left. Now it looks steeper and longer than anticipated.
Closer view of Solar Slabs. The approach climb is four pitches in length and climbs the Solar Slab Gully which is in the deep cleft in the middle of the picture. The remainder of the climb is five more pitches for a total of nine pitches with an option to do a few more at the top. AAI guide Tim Connelly taking a break at the top of the Solar Slab Gully. The first four pitches offer moderate climbing at a the 5.2 level. Exum guide, IMCS guide and AMGA examiner Tom Hargis at the bottom of the beautiful Solar Slab face with the 5th pitch of the climb above him. The 6th pitch of Solar Slab heads steeply of a big, rounded flake to a belay in a small alcove (away from the heat of the sun). The 7th pitch of Solar Slab involves more steep but moderate climbing on beautifully varnished rock. All of the pitches are long, between 130 to 165 feet. This pitch is rated 5.6. The Thirteen-Mile campsite outside of Las Vegas is run by the BLM and is the choice for budget minded climbers or climbers that want little to do without the lights and glitter of the big city. The campground is a great place to network with other climbers and get up to day route information.
