Join IMCS guides for a climb of the Southeast Face or North Ridge of Artesonraju (19,767ft / 6,025m) in the Cordillera Blanca of Peru. Artesonraju as seen from the summit of Pisco. Photo by Maury McKinney (click for larger image)
Never heard of it? If you have seen a Hollywood film made by Paramount pictures then you have seen Artesonraju; it's the beautiful mountain with the stars around it.
It was first climbed in 1932 by E. Hein and E. Schneider of Germany.
Our adventure begins when we land in Lima and prepare for same-day transport to the mountain town of Huaraz. Nestled beneath the Cordillera Blanca, Huaraz is the cultural center of the region and Peru's hub for the international climbing community. Acclimatization begins in Huaraz where, at 10,300', we spend two days exploring the colorful town and organizing ourselves for the upcoming climbs of Pisco and Artesonraju.
Artesonraju is a magnificent snow and ice pyramid that offers wild climbing for experienced mountaineers. The route features snow slopes steeper than 60 degrees with a spectacularly exposed corniced ridge leading to the summit. A nice thing About Artesonraju is that it is far less crowded than Alpamayo or Huascaran. The approach along the Lake Paron is a highlight in itself, and the middle camp among the trees is as pleasant a campsite as you can find in this area. Expect a twenty-hour climb to the summit and back to camp.
Cost: $3,700 group of three
$4,200 group of two
$6,250 private
