IMCS
has formed a guide exchange program with Exum Mountain Guides in Grand Teton National Park. Exum has provided mountain adventures for all levels of climbers since 1926, when Paul Petzholdt began guiding in the Tetons. In 1931 Glenn Exum, his colleague, made the famous first ascent of the ridge that bears his name. Exum is the only guide service the National Park allows to guide all peaks and routes in the Teton Range year round, and the world famous Owen-Spaulding Route and Exum Ridge in July through early September During teh past ten years IMCS guides Maury McKinney, Paul Cormier, Kevin Mahoney, Ben Gilmore and Frank carus have headed west to work for Exum. Kevin and Ben continue to work at Exum each summer. In the winter, Exum Senior guide Tom Hargis and his wife Cindi have come east to balance the exchange. Tom has "been there and done that" during his climbing and guiding career yet maintains a love and enthusiasm for climbing and guiding that inspires all of the younger guides here at IMCS. His wife Cyndi manages the office operations at Exum and is able to provide a wealth of information about IMCS or Exum climbing programs. Give her a call in the office this winter if you have questions about guided climbs in the Tetons. The exchange arrangement has allowed IMCS guides to broaden their guiding experience and learn many new and practical guiding skills in alpine terrain. The list of guides that work for Exum reads like a "Who's Who" of American Mountaineering. During the busy summer season, Exum deploys from 30-40 guides a day into the field for instruction and guided climbs. IMCS looks forward to working with these guides for years to come because it is great fun and learning rolled into a season of hard work. Grand Teton At
13,770 feet the Grand Teton presents an awe inspiring view from any direction. The Grand Teton towers above the other peaks and begs to be climbed. In the more than 100 years of climbing on the Grand, routes to its summit have been found that will satisfy anyone's taste. Climbing the Grand with Exum involves two days of rock climbing and rope management preparation for the two day climb of the Grand. Start out at 10:00am and ascend 5,000 vertical feet and approximately 8 miles to the Lower Saddle (11,600+ ft). The hike through Garnet Canyon has impressive views which make the strenuous ascent enjoyable. But don't forget good rain/wind gear as fast moving storm fronts are likely. Meet with guides after reaching the Lower saddle to go over last minute questions and strategy for the climb. Get to bed early for the 3:00am wake up the following morning. Leave the hut at 4:00am and head up. Each day is a little different but climbing the Grand will always be a life-long memory. Other featured routes include the Owen-Spaulding Route, Mt Moran, Mt Teewinot, Baxter's Pinnacle, Symmetree Spire, The Snaz, Irene's Arete and many others. Please give Exum a call directly at (307) 733-2297 to secure a date to climb the Grand Teton.
