Mt. Hood & Smith Rock Climbing Trip
Cascades, Oregon
May 12-20, 2007
Join IMCS and Timberline Mountain Guides for a spring climbing adventure to Mt. Hood, Oregon's highest peak (11,240 feet). The peak rises one vertical mile above Timberline Lodge with twelve glaciers perched on it's flanks. There are many climbing routes varying in difficulty from fairly easy to advanced and all require proficiency in the use of an ice axe, rope and crampons. The West Face of Mt. Timberline Mountain Guides has been in operation since 1983 and is Oregon’s most experienced climbing school and guide service. Timberline Mountain Guides is accredited by the American Mountain Guides Association and permitted by the National Forest Service to guide on Mt. Hood. Owners Pete Keane and Steve Baldwin are excited about forming this professional exchange program with IMCS guides to make this climb a memorable experience for eastern climbers.
Whether you simply want to enjoy the view from the top of Mt Hood, or take another step toward becoming an accomplished mountaineer, let us help you get there. For the total alpinist, we also offer courses and climbs on rock at Smith Rock State Park and alpine rock climbing in the Oregon Cascades. A couple of days rock climbing at Smith Rock will round out this trip quite nicely as it is about one and a half hours away from the base of Mt Hood.
For a three day trip to climb Mt. Hood during the spring season we will most likely camp at Illumination Saddle, which is about a four hour approach with packs and clients. It has good access to teaching a snow climbing school, as well as the Reid Glacier. Also, we can access the standard route from there, as well as a few more difficult intermediate routes like Leuthold Coulior and Reid Headwall which are 45 to 50 deg snow climbs. If the group has different inclinations and abilities this will work well. On overnight trips, Timberline Mountain Guides will supply tents, stoves, breakfast, lunch and dinner. Climbers will need to provide their own munchie foods. Timberline Mountain Guides will also provide boots, crampons, ice axe, helmet and alpine harness for folks who do not want to deal with bringing that stuff out west. You are encouraged to bring your own climbing gear if you have it.
