Ama
Dablam (22,525 ft.) is the one of the most beautiful mountains in
the Himalaya. It stands, proudly, at the head of the Khumbu valley,
in clear view of
Mt. Everest, Lhotse, Makulu and Cho Oyu. "A near perfect climb
on a near perfect mountain", was the way American Sue Giller
described her ascent in 1982. |
 |
| Join IMCS guides Brad White and Kevin Mahoney to climb
Ama Dablam. From feedback we have received over the past few months
it would seem that we have enough climbers interested in this trip
to run it as planned. Now is the time to commit to joining the team
so we can begin preparing for this "trip of a lefetime".
|
We already have one climber committed to this climb
so it is time for us to start getting a team together. Our 2001 trip
was canceled due to the terrorist attacks on New York and Washington
DC. We could not get enough climbers interested in 2002 due to continued
political and social instability in Nepal. In 2003 we went to Annapurna
IV and had a wonderful experience. 2004 is the year for us to climb
Ama Dablam. |
| The Southwest Ridge was first climbed 13
March 1961 by Barry Bishop (USA), Michael Ward (UK), Wally Romanes
and Michael Gill (NZ). The route is very technical. The SW Ridge involves
1500 meters of climbing, at first on granite and later on 40-60 degree
snow and ice. 5.9 rock and steep ice are the cruxes with thousands
of vertical feet of moderate fifth class climbing in between. |
The
name Ama Dablam means Mother's Charm Box. Ama refers to the enfolding
arms of the mountain's long ridges protecting the Mingbo valley. Dablam
is the name of the double pendant containing pictures of the gods,
worn by a Sherpa woman. Dablam also refers in climbing terms to the
two lumps of hanging glacier stuck on the upper part of the South-West
Face. |
| All team members will be expected to contribute
to the expedition's success. The itinerary is being organized in such
a way as to allow all climbers to help establish camps, set fixed
lines and support their team mates summit attempts. Summit day on
Ama Dablam involves nearly 2,000 feet of steep snow and ice climbing. |
| The route will challenge everyone and we
will all be responsible for cleaning fixed gear from the route at
the end of the trip. Pack it in, pack it out. |
| Expedition Guides will be IMCS co-owner Brad White and
Kevin Mahoney. |
| Land cost: $8,850 |
